This lesson extends the numbering of objects to 40.

A single column or less may constitute one exercise, as may seem best to the instructor.

Each exercise should include a review of the preceding ones.

- Supplement this exercise by having children line up and count physical objects.

STEP 3

- While teaching children to count up to 40, continue to teach place value.
- Tie two groups of 10 objects (sticks, pencils, paperclips etc.). Tell the class - I'm holding two groups of 10. Ask - 'How many objects are in these two bunches?' When they say '20', write the number '20' on the board.
- Hold up two bunches and one object and ask - 'How many objects am I holding now?' When they answer '21', say - 'Yes, twenty-one is made up of two 10s and one 1.
- Write the number '21.' Point at the '2' in the 10s place and say 'two 10s.' Point at the '1' in the 1s place and say 'one 1.'
- Do this for values between 21 and 40.
